Explore All Brookgreen Gardens Has To Offer

Roses

Visitors who explore Brookgreen Gardens may be surprised at everything it has to offer. The sprawling campus includes a botanical garden, a collection of sculptures, a zoo, a history lesson on South Carolina wildlife, and more.

Sculptures in the Garden

With more than 2,000 works by 430 artists integrated into the garden, Brookgreen Gardens contains the largest and most comprehensive collection of American figurative sculptures in the United States. Three indoor galleries include smaller sculptures, paintings, etchings, and other pieces. This includes the Bleifeld Gallery, where art by Anna Hyatt Huntington, Gertrude Lathrop, Stanley Bleifeld, Grainger McKoy, Sandy Scott, and Kent Ullberg is housed. There are also sculpture workshops, a master sculptor program, and other learning opportunities.

Trees and Blooms

Many people who visit the gardens find them simply breathtaking. The Live Oak Allée includes live oak trees that were planted before George Washington was born. Guests commonly come away stunned by the brilliant array of perennials, roses, shrubs, and mature trees found at the Brenda W. Rosen Carolina Terrace Garden. The Sabal palmetto, South Carolina’s state tree, is found in the Palmetto Garden, as is the Fountain of the Muses Garden. Finally, people are also delighted by the surprises they find in the Butterfly Garden.

Plants and Wildlife

South Carolina’s native plants and animals are on full display in their natural habitats in the history and wildlife preserve. Between March and November, guests can take guided creek excursions where they will see historic rice fields, alligators, waterfowl, and osprey. Another attraction, the Lowcountry Trail, gives visitors a chance to see where enslaved people once worked planting, growing, and harvesting at the site. The Floyd Family Farm offers a chance to see Tunis sheep, Spanish goats, Red Devon cows, Marsh Tacky horses, and Dominque chickens.

Zoo at Brookgreen

There are several animals in the zoo that were either born into captivity or sustained an injury that made surviving in the wild impossible. Some animals that live in the zoo are bald eagles, grey foxes, hawks, owls, red foxes, river otters, white-tailed deer, ducks, and herons. The zoo also features a butterfly house that is home to the following:

  • Gulf Fritillary
  • Monarch
  • Zebra Longwing
  • Giant Swallowtail
  • Black Swallowtail
  • Red Admiral
  • Painted Lady
  • American Lady
